Wood used for building and for doors and windows

Since it is so elastic and workable, wood is mostly used for load-bearing sections which are subject to bending. Its use is therefore widespread in floor and ceiling joists, and in the door and window headers. The commonest types of wood used here in Valle d'Aosta are larch, because its physical and mechanical properties are excellent, spruce, used when torsional forces are lighter, and pine, which is lightweight and light-coloured.

Marble and other building materials

Marble and other building materials

Load-bearing structures used to be made entirely of stone, but nowadays are made of brick and sometimes have stone facing. In big city centres, the tendency is to use the most modern building materials. The particular make-up of glacial rock in Valle d'Aosta means that we tend to use a series of special marbles and granites for indoor and outdoor facings. These include green Valle d'Aosta marble, San Nicolaus, Alpi, Gressoney, Valle d'Aosta onyx, green Aosta granites, silver green, and Cogne stone.

Buildings and civil engineering

Traditional architecture in Valle d'Aosta is very simple. Roofs are usually flagstones laid on strong wooden beams, and these beams are usually left in full view to give a "warmer" feeling to the rooms. The load-bearing structure of the house is usually made of stone, although nowadays we tend to use brick more and more, except in the classical Alpine chalet which is made entirely of wood.
